Shrimp wonton soup. This Wonton Soup is my second favorite Chinese soup. It’s made with a savory broth and filled with delicious homemade wontons. It’s a yummy meal that can be ready to eat in less than half an hour. My favorite Chinese soup is even better, but that’s another story!

Don’t worry if you think you can’t make your own wontons. With my simple recipe and instructions, you can easily learn to make them in just a few minutes. It’s even easier to make the soup broth. Just mix chicken broth with some seasonings and cook shrimp and bok choy in it. Easy peasy!

I enjoy this wonton soup, but it’s not my favorite. That honor belongs to Hot and Sour Soup. It’s not only tasty but also a great remedy for a cold.

Why to Make Shrimp Wonton Soup

Making homemade wontons might seem intimidating, but I promise it’s actually very easy. You can even make your own wontons and a tasty soup in much less time than it takes to order and pick up takeout! If you’re near an Asian supermarket, you can buy frozen wontons.

But homemade pork and shrimp wontons are way tastier. Trust me, it’s worth giving them a try! I love wontons, both fried until crunchy and in wonton soup. To make wonton soup, I use store-bought wonton wrappers. They are super easy to find in the produce section of most supermarkets. Making them from scratch takes longer and the wontons won’t be as good.

How to Make Shrimp Wonton Soup

Making wontons and soup broth is easy and you can enjoy a delicious and healthy meal. All you need to do is follow the recipe, which is included below.

Mix together the pork, shrimp, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, salt, white pepper, and cornstarch to make the wonton filling. Take a wonton wrapper and place a spoonful of the filling in the middle. Fold the wrapper into a triangle shape and seal the edges with a bit of water.

Next, hold the two corners of the long side of the triangle and bring them together. This will make the wonton look like a purse. Then use water to seal the corners together. Finally, arrange all the completed wontons on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Heat some chicken broth in a pot with ginger, soy sauce, cooking wine, and sesame oil. Simmer for a few minutes. Add bok choy, shrimp, and green onions and simmer until the shrimp is cooked.
Boil some water in a pot. Drop the wontons in (cook them in batches to avoid crowding) and cook until they float.

Use a slotted spoon to move the shrimp, bok choy, and wontons into separate serving bowls. Finally, pour the wonton soup broth over the ingredients in each bowl and serve.

Shrimp Wonton Soup

Ingredients

  • 3/4 pound 360 g) gound pork
  • 8 oz (240 g) raw shrimp peeled, deveined and finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled and minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 8 oz (240 g) package wonton wrappers
  • 4 sprig onions, finely sliced, to garnish
  • For the Soup:
  • 6 cups (1.5 L) chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Shiaoxing wine
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 4-6 leaves bok choy
  • 1/2 pound (240 g) shrimp, peeled and minced
  • 3 scallions thinly sliced

Method

Step 1

To make wontons, get a big bowl. Put in pork, shrimp, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, cornstarch, salt, and white pepper. Mix everything together until it is all blended.

Step 2

Working with one wonton wrapper at a time, brush the two sides next to each other with water. Put one teaspoon of filling on the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half to make a triangle. Press the sides together. Hold the two corners on the long side and bring them together. Put a little water on the corners to make them stick. Repeat until all the wrappers and filling are used. Put them on a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 3

To make the soup, put a medium saucepan on high heat. Pour the broth, ginger, soy sauce, cooking wine, and sesame oil into the pan. Heat until it's simmering.

Step 4

Put the lid on the pot and turn the heat down to medium. Let it cook for around 10 minutes. Put the bok choy, shrimp, and green onions in the soup and cook for about 2 minutes until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through.

Step 5

Bring a big pot of water to a boil. Put in a few wontons at a time, and wait until they float to the top - that'll take about 5 minutes. Cook 3 to 5 wontons per person. So, if you're feeding 4 people, cook around 16 wontons. If everyone is really hungry, make more!

Step 6

Using a slotted spoon, divide the shrimp and bok choy between 4 bowls. Put the cooked wontons in the bowls. Ladle the soup over the shrimp, wontons, and bok choy. Serve right away.
