What Makes Nova Scotia Seafood Chowder So Special?

Nova Scotia seafood chowder is a traditional favorite of the province and is made with a mixture of potatoes, milk, cream, salt, pepper, and seafood.

Nova Scotia seafood chowder is not like other chowders. It has a unique blend of ingredients that creates a creamy broth that surrounds the chunks of potatoes and fish. The brandy sauce gives it an intense flavor and makes it perfect for chilly winter days.

How to Make Nova Scotia Seafood Chowder in a Slow Cooker

To make this chowder, start by gathering your ingredients. You will need 2 pounds (960 g) of mussels, which should be scrubbed clean. In a slow cooker, combine the mussels with 2/3 cups (160 ml) of dry white wine. Add in 3 ribs of celery, thinly sliced, and 2 yellow onions, peeled and chopped. These vegetables will add a depth of flavor to the chowder.

Next, it’s time to add the seafood. You can use a variety of seafood in this chowder, such as shrimp, scallops, and white fish. Add in 2 cups (500 ml) of your chosen seafood, making sure to cut the fish into bite-sized pieces. The seafood will cook slowly in the flavorful broth, resulting in tender and succulent bites.

Finally, season the chowder with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours. The slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld together and the seafood to become perfectly cooked.

Serve the Nova Scotia seafood chowder hot, garnished with fresh parsley, and accompanied by crusty bread. This chowder is a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for any occasion. Enjoy the flavors of the sea in every spoonful.
