Crock Pot Five-Spice Beef Stew Recipe

Very easy to make a beef stew with lots of Asian flavors, such as five-spice powder and Chinese chili sauce.

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients: 1 pound (480 g) beef round steak, cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes, 3/4 cup (180 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice, 3/4 cup (180 ml) reduced-sodium fat-free beef broth,  2 cups coarsely sliced Napa cabbage, 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and cut into thin wedges, 1 red bell pepper, cored and thinly sliced, 1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce, 1 teaspoon Chinese chili sauce with garlic, 1¼ teaspoons five-spice powder, 4 oz (120 g) bean thread noodles, salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions: In a 6-quart (6L) crock pot, combine all ingredients, except noodles and seasoning. Cover the cooker and cook on a low-heat setting for 6-8 hours.

During the last hour of cooking time, soak bean thread noodles in hot water to cover in a large bowl, for 15 minutes. Drain well using a colander, then stir into beef stew during the last 30 minutes of cooking time.

Turn off the crock pot and open the lid. Season stew with salt and black pepper. Stir well. Ladle into soup bowls and serve immediately.

Crock Pot Hearty Beef Stew Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (960 g) stewing beef, cubed
  • 5 carrots, sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 ribs celery, sliced
  • 22 oz (360 ml) can stewed tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • cooked crispy bacon
  • chopped fresh parsley

Method

Step 1

In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients, except bacon and parsley. Mix well.

Step 2

Cover slow cooker and cook on low-heat setting for 5-6 hours.

Step 3

Open the slow cooker and discard bay leaves. Transfer cooked beef with vegetables to a serving platter. Place crispy bacon over meat. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and serve immediately.
