Oven-baked homemade apple pie recipe. Very easy and delicious fruit pie baked in the oven. An excellent dessert! This apple pie is a two-crust pie pastry-based recipe. Fruit pie is always in season and fresh fruit is unavailable, canned and frozen products can be substituted.
Ingredients for Oven-Baked Homemade Apple Pie
To bake the perfect oven-baked homemade apple pie, you’ll need a few key ingredients. For the pie crust, you’ll need all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, unsalted butter, and ice water. For the apple filling, you’ll need apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well), lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, all-purpose flour, and unsalted butter.
Make sure to choose fresh, firm apples that are not overly ripe. With these ingredients on hand, you’ll be ready to start baking your delicious apple pie from scratch!
Steps to Prepare the Perfect Pie Crust
To make the perfect pie crust, you will need flour, salt, sugar, unsalted butter, and ice water. Begin by combining 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a large mixing bowl. Cut 1 stick of unsalted butter into small pieces and add them to the bowl.
Using your hands or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse sand. Gradually add 3-4 tablespoons of ice water, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to mix the dough. Stop adding water when the dough comes together and forms a ball.
Next, transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently for a few seconds until it becomes smooth. Flatten the dough into a disk shape and wrap it in plastic wrap. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out.
When you’re ready to roll out the dough, remove it from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes. Dust your work surface with flour and place the dough on top. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a circle that’s about 12 inches in diameter.
Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough to a 9-inch pie dish. Trim the edges of the dough so that it hangs over the edge of the dish by about 1 inch. Fold the excess dough under itself and crimp the edges using your fingers or a fork.
Your pie crust is now ready to be filled with delicious apple filling!
How to Make the Apple Filling
To make the perfect apple filling for your homemade pie, you’ll need to start by selecting the right apples. Choose firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that will hold their shape and not turn to mush when baked.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even pieces. You can use a knife or an apple corer/slicer to make this process easier.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to coat all the apple slices evenly.
Next, add a tablespoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon of cornstarch to the mixture. The lemon juice will add a bright, tangy flavor to the filling, while the cornstarch will help thicken the juices released by the apples during baking.
Mix everything together until the apples are coated in the sugar and spice mixture and the cornstarch is evenly distributed.
Now it’s time to fill your pie crust with the apple filling. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the apple mixture to the prepared crust, leaving behind any excess liquid.
Arrange the apple slices in an even layer, making sure to pack them tightly together. This will prevent any gaps from forming as the pie bakes.
Finally, dot the top of the apple filling with small pieces of butter. This will help create a golden, flaky crust on top of the pie.
With your apple filling complete, it’s time to move on to the final step: baking and serving your delicious homemade apple pie.
Baking and Serving Your Delicious Apple Pie
Once you have prepared your apple pie, it’s time to bake it to perfection. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and place the pie on the middle rack. Bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Once the pie is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to set and make it easier to slice.
When serving, you can add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of each slice for an extra touch of sweetness. And there you have it – a delicious homemade apple pie that will impress all your friends and family!
