This Pressure Cooker French Onion Chicken is a great meal for busy cooks! It’s easy to make with only a few ingredients and takes less than 30 minutes. Plus, it’s healthy – it’s low-carb, keto and gluten-free. But you can make it even tastier by serving it with pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes.

This recipe is a flavourful dinner idea! French onion soup is combined with tender shredded chicken and a delicious mushroom sauce, all cooked together in an Instant Pot. This meal is sure to be a hit!

We’re using a French onion mix instead of cutting onions from scratch. It adds lots of flavor and texture to the sauce, like a gravy mix. It also makes it quick and easy – perfect for a weeknight dinner. We add cream cheese for a yummy cheese flavor and creaminess. Then the cooked chicken is shredded and put back in the sauce.

The meat is covered in the delicious French onion sauce. Yum! This dish can be served as a stew with bread, over pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes, or as a sandwich. For a low-carb meal, try with cauliflower rice or a side of veggies or zucchini noodles.

Ingredients to Make French Onion Chicken

Chicken-We used two big chicken breasts. We took the skin and bone off and cut each breast into three pieces. Cooking it like this takes less time and the chicken comes out soft. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs.

French Onion Soup Mix- For French onion soup, we used one packet of soup mix powder. The amount we used was 3 tablespoons, or about 40 grams (1.4 ounces). Look at the packets to see if they are gluten-free.

Cream Cheese- Try using reduced-fat cream cheese in your dish if you want to make it lighter and cut down the calories. However, you can also use full-fat cream cheese.

Other Ingredients– Mushrooms are not required but they will give the dish a yummy, savory taste and extra vitamins. Use low-sodium chicken stock for this recipe. The French onion soup mix and cream cheese have enough salt in them. If you don’t have low-sodium stock, add some water to make it less salty.

Garlic– Garlic is a great addition to creamy sauces, but it’s optional. You can use garlic powder instead. And don’t forget green onions for a tasty topping!

How to make French Onion Chicken in a Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot

Cut the chicken breasts into three smaller pieces. Slice the mushrooms, chop the onion and garlic, and get the chicken stock ready.

Put the cup of chicken stock into the Instant Pot. Mix in half of the French onion mix and half of the garlic.

Place the chicken pieces in the stock and sprinkle the rest of the onion mix and garlic on top. Place the mushrooms on top and add a block of cream cheese in the middle.

Close the Instant Pot’s lid, and set it to Pressure Cook for 15 minutes on HIGH pressure. Wait 6-7 minutes for the pressure to build, then wait 5 minutes after the timer rings. Finally, release the pressure.

Open the lid and take out the chicken. Put it aside.

Push the button on the Instant Pot that says “Saute” and mix the sauce with a whisk or spoon to break up any chunks of cream cheese. Keep stirring until the sauce starts to boil and the cream cheese melts – it should take 2-3 minutes. The sauce should get thicker.

Pull the cooked chicken apart with two forks. Cut it into pieces and put it back into the sauce with half of the green onions. Stir it together.

To make the sauce thicker, mix a tablespoon of flour or cornstarch with 2-3 tablespoons of water in a bowl. Add it to the chicken and stir until the sauce looks thicker.

How to Serve French Onion Chicken

Saucy chicken can be served in lots of delicious ways. Here are some ideas:

– Stew it up with a spoon and bread for dipping, plus croutons on top.
– Serve it with a starchy side like pasta, gnocchi, rice, potatoes, quinoa, polenta, or couscous.
– Make a sandwich with it, just like a steak or pot roast sandwich.
– Turn it into a casserole – add noodles or veggies and some cheese.
– Don’t forget to add some veggies, like steamed green beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and peas.
– For a lighter option, serve it over greens or cauliflower rice.

Make dinner in a hurry with this delicious Pressure Cooker French Chicken! This tasty meal is ready in 30 minutes or less and is packed with flavor. It combines French onion soup, melt-in-your-mouth shredded chicken, and a creamy mushroom sauce. And it’s low-carb, keto, and gluten-free friendly!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 ml) low-sodium chicken stock
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 packet (1.4 oz) of French Onion Mix
  • 2 large skinless and boneless chicken breasts, cut into 3 pieces
  • 5 oz (150 g) brown mushrooms, sliced
  • 8 oz (240 g) cream cheese

Method

Step 1

In a pressure cooker, combine 1 cup (250 ml) of chicken stock, 1/2 of French Onion Mix, and half of minced garlic. Stir well.

Step 2

Put the chicken breasts into the stock and top it off with a sprinkle of Onion Mix and remaining garlic. Add some mushrooms to the top of the sauce and put a chunk of cream cheese in the middle. Don't mix them. The cream cheese will melt into the sauce while it's cooking.

Step 3

Close the pot and lock the lid. Set the machine to cook to high pressure. Set the timer to cook for 15 minutes.

Step 4

Using the Quick Release method, bring pressure to normal. Carefully unlock and open the lid. Using tongs, remove cooked chicken pieces and shred them. Set aside.

Step 5

Press the Saute button on your Instant Pot. Use a whisk or spatula to mix the sauce around a bit. Eventually, the cream cheese will melt. Let the sauce cook for 2-3 minutes to thicken. Add the chicken and half of the green onions to the sauce. Stir until everything is mixed together.

Step 6

If you want the sauce to be thicker, mix 1 tablespoon of flour or cornstarch with 2-3 tablespoons of water in a bowl. Stir it into the chicken and the sauce will get thicker. Serve it over pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, or as a stew with bread or croutons. You can also use cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles if you don't want carbs.
