How to Make Sauce Divan


Ingredients: 3 tablespoons (45 ml) margarine or salted butter, 1/4 cup (60 ml) all-purpose flour, 2½ cups (375 ml) half-and-half, 1/4 cup (60 ml) dry sherry (you can use half-and-half as the substitute), salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions: In a medium saucepan, melt margarine or butter over medium-high heat. Stir in all-purpose flour and cook, stirring occasionally, for 1-2 minutes. Whisk in half-and-half and bring the mixture to a boil, whisking until thickened, for a further 1 minute.

Stir in dry sherry, then season to taste with salt and black pepper. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside. Allow cooling completely. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Slow Cooker Chicken Divan Casserole Recipe

Ingredients

  • Sauce Divan (see recipe above)
  • 6 boneless and skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes
  • 3 cups broccoli florets and sliced stems
  • 4 cups cooked pasta or rice
  • cooking oil

Method

Step 1

In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add cubed chicken and cook until golden. Remove cooked chicken from the skillet and set aside.

Step 2

Spoon 1 cup (250 ml) Sauce Divan into 6-quart (6 L) slow cooker. Top with chicken, then pour in the remaining sauce.

Step 3

Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 4-5 hours, adding broccoli during last 30 minutes.

Step 4

Turn off the cooker and open the lid. Stir chicken casserole well. Sprinkle with paprika (optional). Serve over cooked pasta or rice.
