Slow Cooker Chicken Shawarma Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (960 g) boneless and skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
  • For the Dry Mix:
  • 1½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground sumac
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • a pinch of ground cloves

Method

Step 1

Place chicken breasts in 6-quart (6 L) slow cooker. Pour the water over the chicken.

Step 2

Close the pot and cook on high-heat setting for 2 hours or until chicken is cooked through.

Step 3

Turn off the cooker and open the lid. Using tongs, remove chicken from the slow cooker and transfer to a cutting board. Shred against the grain.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Mix well and set aside.

Step 5

In a large heavy pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add shredded chicken to the hot oil and sprinkle with spice mixture.

Step 6

Fry without stirring until crisp. Pour 1mote tablespoon oil over chicken and flip it, stirring and making sure chicken is well coated with the spice mixture.

Step 7

Once the chicken is crisp, remove from the pan and transfer to a serving plate. Serve with Greek tzatziki sauce.
