Slow Cooker Meatball Sandwiches Recipe
Bake in an oven for 25 minutes at 350º F (175º C), then slow cooker at the low-heat setting for 3-4 hours.
Ingredients
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 2/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion
- 1/3 cup dried breadcrumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1½ pounds (720 g) lean ground beef
- 15 oz (450 ml) can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
- 8 buns
- 2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
Method
Step 1
Preheat an oven to 350 F (175 C). In a large mixing bowl, combine beaten egg, 1/3 cup chopped yellow onion, breadcrumbs, salt, oregano, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well. Add ground beef and stir well again.
Step 2
Shape beef mixture into 32 meatballs. Arrange meatballs in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Step 3
Turn off the oven. Remove baked meatballs and drain off fat.
Step 4
In a 4-quart (4 L) slow cooker, combine tomato sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, garlic salt, hot pepper sauce, remaining chopped onion, and remaining black pepper. Stir well. Add baked meatballs and stir gently to coat with sauce.
Step 5
Cover the pot and cook on a low-heat setting for 3-4 hours.
Step 6
Turn off the slow cooker and open the lid. Stir meatballs well before serving.
Step 7
To serve, arrange four meatballs in each bun. Pour the sauce over meatballs, then sprinkle with shredded cheese. Serve hot.
