How to Prepare Polenta in Slow Cooker

makes 6 servings

Ingredients: 3/4 cup (180 ml) yellow cornmeal, 2 cups (500 ml) water, 2 tablespoons 30 ml) unsalted butter, 1/2 cup (125 ml) freshly grated Parmesan cheese, salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions: In 4-quart (4 L) slow cooker, combine cornmeal and water. Mix well. Cover the pot and cook on high-heat setting for 1½ hours, stirring once after 45 minutes. Stir in unsalted butter and grated Parmesan.

Cover slow cooker and cook for further 15 minutes. Turn off the pot and open the lid. Season cooked polenta with salt and black pepper to taste.

Slow Cooker Ham and Pepper Stew with Polenta Recipe

makes 4 servings

Ingredients: 1/2 pound (240 g) cubed ham steak, 14½ oz can (435 ml) diced tomatoes, undrained, 1½ cups (375 ml) cubed mixed green, red, and yellow bell peppers, 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped, 1 garlic clove, peeled and minced, 1 bay leaf, 1-1½ teaspoons (5-7 ml) dried Italian seasoning, salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste, cooked Polenta, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions: In 4-6 quart (4-6 L) slow cooker, combine all ingredients, except salt, black pepper, and cook polenta. Cover the pot and cook on high-heat setting for 4-5 hours. Turn off the slow cooker and open the lid. Discard the bay leaf. Season to taste with salt and black pepper and stir well.

Slow Cooker Ham-Vegetable Stew Recipe


  • 2 pounds (960 g) ham hock
  • 2-3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 16 oz (480 g) frozen green beans, thawed
  • 1large carrot, peeled and chopped


Step 1

Place ham hocks in 4-6 quart (4-6 L) slow cooker. Cover with cold water.

Step 2

Cover the pot and cook on high-heat setting for 5 hours or until ham is very tender. 2-3 hours before, add the potatoes, carrots, and green beans to the crockpot, adding more water if necessary.

Step 3

Open the lid. Using tongs, remove cooked meat from the cooker. Remove and discard any fat and bones, then return meat to slow cooker. Stir well.

Step 4

Transfer ham-vegetable stew to serving bowls. Serve hot.
