Slow Cooker Marsala-Poached Pears Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 ml) orange juice
  • 1 cup (250 ml) sweet Marsala wine
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3-inch (7.5 cm) stick cinnamon
  • 1 star anise
  • 4 ripe red pears

Method

Step 1

In a 4-quart (4 L) slow cooker, combine orange juice, Marsala wine, brown sugar, cinnamon, and star anise. Stir well.

Step 2

Peel each red pear from the bottom, leaving the stem intact. Stand pears up in the pot. Spoon orange mixture over peeled pears.

Step 3

Cover the cooker and cook on high-heat setting for 1½-2 hours.

Step 4

Turn off the slow cooker and open the lid. Using a slotted spoon remove cooked pears from the pot and transfer to dessert plates, reserving cooking liquid in the cooker. Cook the liquid on high heat setting for a further 20 minutes. Discard cinnamon stick and star anise. Pour over the cooked pears. Serve warm or cold.
