American fish chowder is a delightful and flavorful dish that combines the delicate taste of white fish with a medley of vegetables. This classic recipe is a favorite among seafood lovers and is perfect for a comforting meal on a chilly day.
How to Make Fish Chowder
To make this delicious chowder, start by gathering 2 pounds (960g) of mixed white fish, such as cod or haddock, and cut them into small-sized pieces. In a large pot, cook 2 ounces (60g) of diced bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon from the pot and set it aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pot.
Next, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pot and sauté a large onion, peeled and chopped, until it becomes translucent. Then, add 4 peeled and chopped potatoes and 4 carrots, along with the cooked bacon. Stir everything together and let it cook for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Once the vegetables have softened slightly, add the white fish pieces to the pot. Pour in enough water or fish stock to cover the ingredients, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
The result is a hearty and satisfying fish chowder with a rich and creamy broth. Serve it hot with crusty bread for a complete meal. This American fish chowder is sure to impress your family and friends with its delicious flavors and comforting appeal. Enjoy!

American Fish Chowder Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving American fish chowder, there are several delicious options to consider. Here are a few serving suggestions to enhance your dining experience:
1. Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle some freshly chopped parsley or dill over the chowder just before serving. The vibrant green herbs not only add a pop of color but also bring a refreshing flavor that complements the rich and creamy broth.
2. Serve with Oyster Crackers: Traditional American fish chowder is often accompanied by oyster crackers. These small, crispy crackers add a delightful crunch to each spoonful of chowder and are perfect for dipping into the creamy broth.
3. Pair with a Side Salad: For a well-rounded meal, serve the fish chowder alongside a fresh green salad. The crispness of the salad provides a nice contrast to the warm and comforting chowder. Consider a simple mixed green salad or a tangy Caesar salad.
4. Add a Squeeze of Lemon: Just before enjoying your fish chowder, squeeze a wedge of lemon over the top. The citrusy acidity of the lemon juice cuts through the richness of the chowder and adds a bright and tangy flavor.

How to Store Leftovers
To ensure that you can enjoy your fish chowder leftovers for another meal, it’s important to store them properly. Here are some tips on how to store fish chowder leftovers:
1. Cool the Chowder: Allow it to cool down to room temperature before storing it. This helps prevent bacterial growth and keeps the chowder fresh for longer.
2. Use Airtight Containers: Transfer the leftover fish chowder into airtight containers. Glass or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids work well for this purpose. Make sure to leave some space at the top of the container to allow for expansion during freezing.
3. Label and Date: It’s a good practice to label the containers with the date of storage. This helps you keep track of how long the leftovers have been stored and ensures that you consume them within a safe timeframe.
4. Refrigerate or Freeze: If you plan to consume the leftovers within the next couple of days, store them in the refrigerator. Fish chowder can typically be refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. If you want to store the leftovers for a longer period, it’s best to freeze them. Fish chowder can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
5. Thawing and Reheating: When you’re ready to enjoy the leftover fish chowder, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight if frozen. To reheat, gently warm it on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally. Avoid boiling the chowder as it can cause the ingredients to break apart.
By following these storage tips, you can safely store and enjoy your fish chowder leftovers for another delicious meal. Remember to always use your best judgment and discard any leftovers that appear spoiled or have an off smell.
