Crock pot Portuguese soup recipe. This kale soup recipe is a version of the famous Portuguese soup Caldo Verde. Soups cooked in a crock pot turn flavorful and extremely tasty.

How to Cook Portuguese Kale Soup in a Crock Pot

To cook Portuguese Kale Soup in a Crock Pot, you will need a few key ingredients. Start by gathering 4 cups (1L) of beef broth and 1/4 cup (60 ml) of tomato sauce. These ingredients will form the base of the soup and provide a rich and savory flavor.

Next, add 1/2 pound (240 g) of reduced-fat smoked sausage, sliced into bite-sized pieces. The smoky flavor of the sausage will infuse the soup with a delicious depth of taste.

For added heartiness, include 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes. These potatoes will provide a satisfying texture and help to make the soup more filling.

To enhance the flavor profile, add 1 cup of chopped yellow onion. The onion will add a subtle sweetness and depth to the soup.

Once you have gathered all the ingredients, simply combine them in the crock pot and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours, or on high heat for 3-4 hours. The slow cooking process will allow the flavors to meld together and create a comforting and delicious soup.

Serve the Portuguese Kale Soup hot, garnished with some freshly chopped kale for added freshness and nutritional value. This crock pot recipe is a convenient and easy way to enjoy the flavors of Portugal in the comfort of your own home.

Kale Soup Serving Suggestions

Once you have prepared a delicious batch of Portuguese Kale Soup in your crock pot, it’s time to think about how to serve it. Here are a few serving suggestions to enhance your dining experience.

1. Crusty Bread: Serve the kale soup with a side of crusty bread. The bread can be used to soak up the flavorful broth and add a satisfying crunch to each bite. Choose a rustic loaf or a baguette for the best results.

2. Portuguese Cornbread: For an authentic Portuguese touch, serve the kale soup with a slice of Portuguese cornbread. This dense and slightly sweet bread pairs perfectly with the savory flavors of the soup.

3. Freshly Squeezed Lemon: Squeeze a wedge of fresh lemon over the soup just before serving. The acidity of the lemon juice will brighten the flavors of the soup and add a refreshing tang.

4. Hot Sauce: If you like a bit of heat, add a few drops of hot sauce to your bowl of kale soup. The spicy kick will complement the smoky sausage and add an extra layer of flavor.

5. Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkle some grated Parmesan cheese on top of the soup for a creamy and salty finish. The cheese will melt into the soup, adding richness and depth.

These serving suggestions will elevate your Portuguese Kale Soup to a whole new level. Experiment with different combinations to find your favorite way to enjoy this comforting and nutritious dish.

How to Store Soup Leftovers

When you’ve made a big batch of Portuguese Kale Soup in your crock pot, you may find yourself with some delicious leftovers. Here are some tips on how to store your soup leftovers to ensure they stay fresh and flavorful.

1. Cool the Soup: Before storing your soup, allow it to cool completely. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the container and potentially making the soup watery.

2. Choose the Right Container: Use airtight containers or resealable plastic bags to store your soup. Make sure the containers are clean and dry before adding the soup.

3. Portion Control: Divide the soup into individual serving sizes before storing. This way, you can easily thaw and reheat only the amount you need without having to defrost the entire batch.

4. Label and Date: Don’t forget to label your containers with the date and contents. This will help you keep track of how long the soup has been stored and prevent any confusion.

5. Freeze or Refrigerate: If you plan to consume the soup within a few days, store it in the refrigerator. For longer storage, freeze the soup. It can be kept in the freezer for up to three months.

6. Thawing and Reheating: To thaw frozen soup, transfer it to the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can thaw it in the microwave using the defrost setting. When reheating, make sure the soup reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy your Portuguese Kale Soup leftovers for days to come.
