Instant Pot Chicken Drumsticks with Two Chinese Sauces Recipe

Drumsticks are a delicious and economical alternative to chicken breasts.

Ingredients: For Dipping Sauce 1: 3 tablespoons (45 ml) low-sodium soy sauce, 3 tablespoons (45 ml) reduced-sodium fat-free chicken broth, 1½ tablespoons (22 ml) cold-pressed sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) Asian chili-garlic sauce

For Dipping Sauce 2: 2 tablespoons (30 ml) balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) low-sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) mushroom soy sauce, 2 teaspoons (10 ml) freshly grated ginger, 1 drop Worcestershire sauce

For Chicken: 1 cup (250 ml) reduced-sodium fat-free chicken broth, 1/2 cup (125 ml) water, 1 strip orange zest, 2 green onions, washed and trimmed, 2-star anise pods, 4 slices fresh ginger, crushed, 8 chicken drumsticks

Instructions: In two separate small mixing bowls, combine the dipping sauce ingredients. Mix well, then set both bowls aside for 30 minutes.

In 5-7-quart (5-7 L) instant pot, combine chicken broth, water, orange zest, trimmed green onions, anise, and crushed ginger. Stir well. Arrange the drumsticks in the liquid.

Close pressure cooker and lock the lid. Set burner heat to high pressure. When the cooker reaches high pressure, reduce heat to low. Set timer to cook for 6 minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat. Open pressure cooker with the Quick Release method. Using tongs, remove cooked drumsticks from the cooker and transfer to a small serving platter. Serve hot with reserved dipping sauces.

Instant Pot Chicken Drumsticks Recipe


  • 8 chicken drumsticks, chopped or whole
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) rice wine
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rock sugar
  • 1 oz (30 g) peeled and sliced ginger
  • 14 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 3 dried Chinese red chili peppers
  • 1/2 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 10 frsh Thai basil leaves


Step 1

Heat sesame oil in an electric pressure cooker turned to the browning function. Add ginger and garlic and saute, stirring, until fragrant, for about 30 seconds.

Step 2

Add chicken drunsticks and cook, turning once, for 3 minutes. Pour in reice wine and bring mxiture to a boil. Boil for further 1 minute. Stir in light soy sauce, Chinese red chilies, and rock sugar.

Step 3

Close pressure cooker and lock the lid. Set the machine to cook at high pressure. Set timer to cook for 5 minutes for chopped drumsticks or 10 minutes for whole.

Step 4

Open instant pot, using Natural Release method. Remove cooked drumsticks from the pot and transfer to a large serving bowl.

Step 5

In the instant pot turned to the browning function, bring the sauce to a boil. Stir in dark soy sauce to give it some color and sweeten it a little. Season to taste with more light soy sauce, salt and pepper, if necessary. Stir in fresh basil leaves.

Step 6

Pour the sauce over cooked drumsticks. Serve immediately.
