The Best Sweet and Sour Pork Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 ml) pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1½ pounds (720 g) boneless pork, cubed
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • canola oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, cored and sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, cored and sliced
  • half of yellow onion, peeled and chunked
  • cooked rice

Method

Step 1

To make a sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine pineapple juice, brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, and soy sauce. Whisk well and set aside.

Step 2

In a large pan, heat 3 inches (7.5 cm) of canola oil over medium-high heat. Coat cubed meat in the cornstarch, then dip in beaten eggs and into flour.

Step 3

Drop seasoned pork in the hot oil, one piece at the time. Cook for 2-3 minutes, turning once until cooked through and crispy.

Step 4

Remove cooked pork from the pan and transfer to a large plate.

Step 5

Heat 2 tablespoons canola oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add bell peppers and onions to the hot oil and cook, stirring, occasionally, until crisp-tender.

Step 6

Stir in sweet and sour sauce and let thicken. Add cooked pork and toss well. Serve over cooked rice.
