The best thing about empanadas was that I didn’t need to worry about oil splattering or anything like that. They come out with a perfect golden-brown crust every time, no matter what you put in them. Adding this to the list of benefits is how it’s great for picky eaters since they can choose their own filling!

It doesn’t take long to make one, and they won’t fill up your kitchen with that strong cooking oil smell.

As a first step, you will need to prepare the dough for the empanadas. You can either make your own dough for a freshly baked empanada or choose the pre-made alternative. There are some empanadas recipes that call for using puff pastry or pizza dough, but those don’t really have the right texture.

Puff pastry is too light, while pizza dough can be too bready. Pie crust is a good substitute in a pinch, but it’s pretty sweet. You can always go to the store and buy pre-made empanada dough. It just needs some frying, and it’s usually all set.

  • 10 frozen espanadas discos, thawed
  • 1¼ cups chili
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water


Step 1

Place empanadas dough on a cutting board. Spoon 2 tablespoons of filling onto each empanada dough, then fold it into a half-circle. Pinch the edges of each dough around the filling, then crimp with a fork to seal. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

Step 2

In a small mixing bowl, combine beaten egg and water. whisk well. Brush onto the empanadas.

Step 3

Place the empanadas in the air fryer basket. Fry at 330 F (165 C) for 10 minutes, or until crisp and golden.
