Slow Cooker Beef Brisket with Horseradish Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 cups (500 ml) water
- 1 large yellow onion, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons bottled horseradish
- 2 ½ oz (75g) beef stew mix
- 4-5 pounds (2-2.2 kg) beef brisket,fat trimmed
- 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) cold water
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Method
Step 1
In slow cooker, combine 2 cups water, sliced onion, horseradish, and dry beef stew mix. Mix well.
Step 2
Add beef brisket to slow cooker, slicing in half to fit if necessary. Cover slow cooker and cook on low-heat setting for 7 ½ hours, turning meat once.
Step 3
Open slow cooker and, using tongs, remove cooked beef. Transfer brisket to cutting board, reserving cooking liquid. Cool beef brisket slightly.
Step 4
For horseradish sauce, strain cooking liquid into a bowl and discard solids. Skim fat from cooking liquid. Pour strained liquid into a saucepan. Season with salt and black pepper.
Step 5
In a small mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup (125 ml) cold water and all-purpose flour. Mix until smooth. Heat cooking liquid in the saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Stir in flour mixture, whisking constantly. Simmer, whisking, until thickened.
Step 6
Slice cooked beef brisket. Pour horseradish sauce over. Serve with cooked potatoes.
