Ingredients

  • To Make the Apple Filling:
  • 6 large apples, peeled and chunked
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • To Make the Crisp Topping:
  • 1½ cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter
  • To Serve:
  • Vanilla ice cream

Method

Step 1

Place chunked apples in a 6-quart (6 L0 slow cooker. Add the maple syrup, cornstarch, lemon zest, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and kosher salt. Stir well and spread the apples into an even single layer.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Mix well. Pour in the melted butter and stir until moistened. Sprinkle the crisp topping mixture over the top of the apples.

Step 3

Place a kitchen towel on the top of the cooker and close the lid. Cook on a low-heat setting for 5-7 hours, or until the apples are soft and cooked through.

Step 4

Turn off the slow cooker and open the lid. Remove the towel. Serve hot with vanilla ice cream.
