Slow cooker beef stew Ole recipe. Beef stew is a traditional dish in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and North America. Slow cooking can make beef tough and dry, but this recipe uses liquid to keep it tender.

What is your favorite kind of stew?

I like to make different kinds of stews, but my favorite is Thai chicken noodles. I like it because it’s simple and flavorful, and there are lots of vegetables in it.

What are the benefits of using a slow cooker to make stew?

A slow cooker is an electronic kitchen appliance that slowly cooks food while the user is away. The appliance’s thermostat varies between 5 to 60 degrees Celsius, with 15 degrees being the optimum temperature for cooking. This means that food cooked through a slow cooker will have more flavor and less oil because it doesn’t need to be cooked at high temperatures. It also means that food has more time to cook so it’s tender and can easily absorb other flavors.

Some people may say that using a slow cooker takes longer, but it doesn’t produce heat or steam which both take up energy in the kitchen, which is environmentally friendly. Using the slow cooker also reduces energy costs because you are using less electricity to cook your food.

Is it healthy to cook in low or high-heat settings in a slow cooker?

The short answer is that it doesn’t matter what heat setting you use because the food will cook at the same rate. But if you want to cook meat, there are some considerations to take into account.

If you cook meat on high heat in a slow cooker, it may get overcooked. This is because the low setting will keep the liquid simmering and slow-cooking, but on high heat, this liquid will boil away faster than it would on a low setting.

  • 8 oz (240 ml) can tomato juice
  • 1 package taco sesoning mix
  • 2 cups (500 ml) water, divided
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 tespoon freshly ground black pepper

Method

Step 1

Layer the first four ingredients in the slow cooker. Add tomato sauce.

Step 2

Combine taco seasoning with 1½ cups water. Stir cornstarch into the remaining ½ cup water until smooth Stir into the rest of the water with taco seasoning. Pour over ingredients into the slow cooker. Season with salt and black pepper. Cover and cook on a low-heat setting for 7-8 hours.

Step 3

Serve over rice. Variation for beef stew olé: For those eating at your table who are cautioning about spicy food, choose a "mild" taco seasoning mix and add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the seasonings.
