Oven Baked Swedish Meatballs Recipe
makes 60 meatballs
Ingredients: 1 pound (480 g) ground beef, 1/2 pound (240 g) ground pork, 1/2 cup (125 ml) chopped yellow onion, 3/4 cup (180 ml) breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, lightly beaten, 1/2 cup (125 ml) milk, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) chopped dried parsley, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons (10 ml) salt, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 cup (60 ml) vegetable oil, 1/4 cup (60 ml) all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) paprika, 2 cups (500 ml) boiling water, 3/4 cup (180 ml) sour cream,
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350º F (175º C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch (22.5×26 cm) baking dish with a nonstick cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, chopped yellow onion, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, and milk. Whisk well. Season with chopped dried parsley, Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper. Using your hands, mix well, then shape into walnut-size balls, and arrange on a greased baking dish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, turning frequently, so they brown evenly on all sides.
To make a sauce: In a small saucepan, combine vegetable oil, paprika, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper. Stir well and cook over medium heat until sizzling. Pout in hot boiling water and sour cream. Mix well and continue cooking until smooth and heated through.
Remove cooked meatballs from the oven. Pour the creamy sauce over the top and return meatballs to the oven. Cook for a further 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off the oven and remove meatballs from it. Transfer to a serving plate. Pout the sauce over and serve immediately.
Slow Cooker Swedish Meatballs Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup (250 ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pound (480 g) ground pork
- 1 pound (480 g) ground turkey
- 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1½ teaspoons ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) sour cream
Method
Step 1
In a 6-quart (6 L) slow cooker, combine beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground pork, turkey, breadcrumbs, eggs, allspice, onion powder, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Using your hands, mix well. Roll the meat mixture into balls, then arrange in a single layer in the slow cooker. When the bottom of the cooker is covered, add one more level.
Step 3
Cover the pot and cook on high heat setting for 2 hours or until metballs are cooked through.
Step 4
In a small mixing bowl, combine the butter and all-purpose flour. Mix until smooth paste. Set aside.
Step 5
Turn off the slow cooker and open the lid. Using a slotted spoon, remove cooked meatballs from the pot and transfer to a large bowl, reserving cooking liquid.
Step 6
Stir the butter-flour paste into reserved liquid. Pour in the sour cream. Return meatballs to the pot and stir well to coat with the sauce.
Step 7
Cook on high heat setting, uncovered, until the sauce is thickened, for a further 30 minutes.
Step 8
Remove meatballs from the cooker and transfer to a serving plate. Pour the sauce over. Sprinkle with parsley and serve immediately.
