Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 3/4 pound boneless pork, cubed
  • canola oil
  • 1½ cups chunked green bell peppers
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 yellow onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 cup cubed pineapples

Method

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, Chinese five-spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and set aside.

Step 2

In another mixing bowl, combine beaten egg and milk. Whisk well.

Step 3

Dredge cubed pork in the flour mixture first, then dip them into the egg and then back into the flour. Sprinkle coated meat with canola oil.

Step 4

Place chunked bell peppers and onions in the air fryer basket. Sprinkle with a little oil. Fry at 400 F (200 C) for 5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.

Step 5

Meanwhile, start making the sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, orange juice, soy sauce, and garlic. Mix well and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.

Step 6

When peppers and onions have finished frying, stir them along with the pineapple chunks into the pan. Continue simmering and stirring, for a further 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat , set aside and keep warm.

Step 7

Add cubed pork to the air fryer basket. Fry at 400 F (200 C) for 6 minutes, shaking the basket for the last minute of the cooking process.

Step 8

Remove fried pork from the fryer and toss with the pineapple, peppers, and sauce. Serve hot.
